Almost 80% of All U.S. Taxpayers efiled Income Tax Returns in 2011
In 2010, almost 141.5 million federal income tax returns were submitted to the IRS and nearly 99 million of these tax returns were efiled. In 2011, more than 100 million individual tax returns were efiled before the April 18 deadline, and as of June, more than 79% of all individual tax returns had been efiled.
More than 1 Billion Tax Returns Safely efiled
June, 2011, marked an efile milestone: one billion efiled tax returns since the inception of the IRS-efile program. The increasing trend among taxpayers to efile is shown in the chart below.
Self-Preparers or efilers Using Home Computers
United States taxpayers who prepare and efile their tax returns from home computers has continued to grow. In 2010 (for Tax Year 2009) over 35% of taxpayers prepared and efiled their federal tax returns themselves. Nearly 35 million tax returns were prepared online and efiled, which is up 8% from the previous year. As of June, 2011, over 38 million tax returns had been self-prepared and efiled.
Tax Refunds - Direct Bank Deposit
In 2010, over 74 million taxpayers received faster federal tax refunds via direct bank deposits into bank accounts through electronic bank transfers. These direct deposit tax refunds accounted for almost 69% of all federal tax refunds, up from 66% of tax refunds in 2009. The average tax refund amount in 2010 was $2,994.
As of June, 2011, over 76 million taxpayers chose direct deposit and got their refunds faster. As of June, the average tax refund received by direct deposit was $3,046.
